Polities & the Federation

The United Kingdom of America comprises 49 constituent polities, the Columbia District, and the Territory of Loreto, spanning ten polity types established through the Charter of Union of the American Colonies (1783) and subsequent parliamentary action.

The Polities of the United Kingdom of America The federation coloured by polity type; select a polity to open its article. Merged or redrawn: one Dakota; Cascadia (Washington and Oregon); Plymouth split from Massachusetts Bay; Wisconsin holding the Upper Peninsula (Michigan keeps Mackinac Island); and the greater March of Arizona, which takes in New Mexico, the Las Vegas Basin, El Paso, the Imperial Valley, the Durango and San Juan highland corner of Colorado, the St. George projection of Deseret, and the detached Rocky Point exclave at Puerto Peñasco. The Territory of Loreto, the Baja peninsula acquired from Mexico in 2027, is drawn from its own coastline; the Alaska and Hawaiʻi insets are moved clear of it. The Navajo Republic sits within the March; the Free City of Philipsburg lies in the Caribbean beyond the frame.

CommonwealthCalifornia, Cascadia, Illinois, West VirginiaBroad autonomy; a thing held in common rather than erected by the Crown
Grand DuchyWisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, LouisianeHereditary head of state acting in the name of the duchy’s own Crown, with no separate representative of the American Crown; three houses invited from foreign thrones, one a cadet line of the House of Hanover

Free CityPhilipsburgChartered municipal autonomy, self-governing city under a Crown charter

The treaty nations are not polities and are not a polity type. The 574 nations on the Schedule hold their land under treaty with the Crown in right of America, or in Alaska under the accession settlement of 1884, and stand outside the 49 in law, from the Navajo Republic, the largest by territory and the only one that is a republic, to nations of a few hundred people. See Treaty Nations of the United Kingdom of America.

Who leads them

Most polities are headed by an office rather than a named person. These are the holders the Register has established.

Three of the four grand duchies invited a house from a foreign throne; the fourth, Michigan, was given a cadet line of the House of Hanover, descended from George III through the Duke of Cambridge. Two polities are presently under a regency, Michigan for the incapacity of a reigning Grand Duke and Alaska for a delegation made in 2004, and they are the only two polities under one.
